Stretch marks: What they are, and how to care for the skin
Stretch marks are completely common and occur when the skin is stretched quickly. Get an overview of why they appear, and how to keep the skin soft and supple every day.

Stretch marks are completely common and something the vast majority get at some point in life, regardless of age and body type. A stretch mark is a type of scar that occurs when the skin is stretched or contracts quickly, for example on the stomach, breasts, arms, thighs and buttocks. They are completely harmless, but many are curious about why they appear and what you can do. This guide explains it, and how you can care for the skin gently every day.
What are stretch marks?
Stretch marks form in the skin's middle layer (the dermis) when the skin is stretched faster than it can keep up with. The connective tissue and the elastic fibres burst, and the result is the characteristic stripes. They are a kind of scar and thus a completely natural reaction from the skin.
Fresh and older stretch marks
Stretch marks often change appearance over time:
- Fresh stretch marks are typically reddish, purple or pink and can be slightly raised.
- Older stretch marks usually fade to a lighter, silvery or white shade and become flatter.
Why do stretch marks appear?
Hormonal changes and heredity play a big role. They most often appear:
- During puberty, when the body grows quickly
- During pregnancy, especially on the stomach and breasts
- With rapid weight loss or weight gain
- With rapid muscle growth, for example from strength training
If your parents have stretch marks, there is a greater chance that you will get them too, regardless of how well you care for the skin.
Can you avoid or remove stretch marks?
It is honest to say that you cannot reliably prevent stretch marks, and that they do not disappear completely again, just like other scars. But they often become less visible over time. Many find it pleasant to care for the skin with moisture along the way, both because it feels good, and because soft, supple skin is generally better off.
Soft, supple skin every day
Many like to care for the skin with oil or lotion, so it feels soft and supple, for example during pregnancy, when the skin is stretched. At ByLykke you will find natural, organic oils such as raspberry seed oil and rosehip seed oil that give the skin moisture and a soft feel:
- Use raspberry seed oil together with ByLykke Lotion for larger areas.
- Use rosehip seed oil together with ByLykke Colostrum Creme for smaller areas.
Massage the oil into the skin in circular movements, it is a pleasant little daily routine.
Frequently asked questions
Do stretch marks disappear on their own?
They do not disappear completely, but often fade and become less visible over time.
Does oil help against stretch marks?
Oil and moisturiser keep the skin soft and supple and are pleasant to use, but it is not a guarantee against stretch marks.
When should I start caring for the skin during pregnancy?
Many begin early and continue for as long as the skin is stretched. Do what feels pleasant to you.
Note: ByLykke's products are cosmetic skincare. They are not a treatment that removes or smooths out stretch marks, but a gentle care that keeps the skin soft and moisturised.
