What is psoriasis? Understand the condition
A short, informational overview of psoriasis: What it is, where it is often seen, and how to look after dry, delicate skin gently in everyday life.

Psoriasis is one of the most widespread skin conditions in Denmark, but there are still many myths about what it actually is. In this informational guide we look at what psoriasis is, how it shows itself, who is typically affected, and what can trigger outbreaks. If you want concrete care advice, you will find it in our guide to skincare with psoriasis.
Important: Psoriasis should always be assessed and treated by a doctor or dermatologist. This article is informational and does not replace a medical assessment.
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis affects around two to three percent of the population. It is a chronic skin condition in which, during an outbreak, the skin's cells renew themselves much faster than normal. Where a skin cell normally takes about a month to reach the surface, with psoriasis it happens in a few days. This causes a build-up of cells, which is seen as thickened, scaly areas. Psoriasis is not contagious.
What does psoriasis look like?
Psoriasis most often shows itself as:
- Red, well-defined areas with silvery-white scale
- Dry, thickened skin that can crack
- Itching in the affected areas
It is seen especially on the scalp, on the elbows, knees and the lower part of the back, but can appear anywhere on the body, including on the nails.
Why does psoriasis occur?
The exact cause is not fully known, but psoriasis is an autoimmune condition with a hereditary component: The immune system sets off a too-rapid renewal of the skin cells. So you cannot "do something wrong" yourself and get psoriasis, it lies within the body.
What can trigger an outbreak?
Many people with psoriasis find that certain things can set off an outbreak:
- Stress
- Infections (for example a throat infection)
- Skin injuries, such as cuts and sunburn
- Dry, cold weather
- Certain types of medication
Many people also experience long, calm periods entirely without outbreaks.
